Mixed Ability Rowing in Bradford is a step closer thanks to the Telegraph and Argus parent company, The Gannett Foundation, donation to Bradford Amateur Rowing Club.

Perry Austin- Clarke, editor of the T&A, presented a cheque to Dr Celia Hickson, President of the Rowing Club for £5000 to help purchase two new boats for the Mixed Ability Rowing Team.

Mixed Ability Sport, which started in Bradford with the Bumbles mixed ability Rugby team, gets less-able bodied athletes active in teams with able-bodied participants.

Mark Goodwin, Director and co-founder of International Mixed Ability Sport which pioneered the concept said “Mixed Ability Sport is founded on the principle of equal participation and the fact that most people will experience some sort of disability at some point in their life.”

Martino Corazza added “IMAS have enjoyed the support of the T&A during the development of the mixed ability sport programme over the last 2 years and are delighted to welcome this new sport, rowing, to the mixed ability fold in Bradford.”

Nationally it is recognised that there is a huge demand for mixed ability sport. Sport England have supported IMAS in the expansion of their programme to include boxing, bowling, dance, tennis, cricket and golf, as well as rowing.

James Searle, Rowability Project Officer for the North of England added “British Rowing are encouraged to see more participation in our sport and are pleased that Bradford ARC have been selected by the Gannett Foundation for support.”

Celia Hickson of Bradford Amateur Rowing Club said “We are thrilled by this award from the Gannett Foundation, which goes a long way to funding the purchase of special boats for the Mixed Ability Rowing Team. The Mixed Ability Sport model challenges attitudes and perceptions of disability and encourages social inclusion. Bradford Amateur Rowing Club looks forward to welcoming new members.”
